The Molecular Haemato-Oncology Laboratory provides a wide range of to aid the diagnosis, prognosis and quantitative monitoring of minimal/ measureable residual disease in myeloid and lymphoid malignancies. We aim to provide an accurate and high quality service in a timely manner. The laboratory is involved in clinical research and development projects and aims to implement new tests as they become clinically relevant.
The Molecular Haemato-Oncology Laboratory forms part of the Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service (HMDS) located at the Western General Hospital along with the Immunophenotyping laboratory.
The Molecular Haemato-Oncology Laboratory is administered through NHS Lothian - University Hospitals Division and is fully integrated within Molecular Pathology in the Department of Laboratory Medicine. The service is part of the Scottish Strategic Network for Genomic Medicine and provides a comprehensive molecular Haemato-Oncology Service service to the populations of Edinburgh, Borders, Fife and Inverness as well as certain specialist assays for all patients within Scotland.
The laboratory is open between 09:00 and 17:00 hrs, Monday to Friday. There is no out-of-hours service available and the laboratory is closed on public holidays.
Specimens should be delivered to the laboratory withing 24 hours of collection (maximum of 48 hours). Therefore, where possible, specimens should not be dispatched on Fridays; if this is unavoidable, please telephone the laboratory and discuss with a member of our team.

Requests should be made using the HMDS request form for all tests, except Next Generation Sequencing for myeloid disorders, for which there is a dedicated form.
