Immunophenotyping reports are available through APEX and TRAK. In addition, paper copies of reports will be returned to the requesting laboratory. For urgent cases, results will be telephoned to the requesting clinician.

The Department of Laboratory Medicine adheres to NHS Lothian’s Policy on Confidentiality of Personal Health Information, meaning that results can only be communicated to individuals authorised to receive them.

Turnaround Times

The turnaround time for all Immunophenotyping requests is 14 days. Monitoring panels have a turnaround time of 48 hours.

Turnaround times are monitored as part of quality assurance.

Quality Assurance

The HMDS carries accreditation to international standard ISO15189:2022. All investigations are subject to rigorous Internal Quality Control (IQC) measures and the laboratory participates in the following External Quality Assurance (EQA) schemes:

  • UK NEQAS Leukaemia Immunophenotyping Part 1

  • UK NEQAS Leukaemia Diagnostic Interpretation Part 2

  • UK NEQAS PNH
  • UK NEQAS Immune Monitoring

Due to the rapid pace of developments in the field of Haematological Malignancy Diagnostics, the department may offer certain services before they have been accredited to ISO 15189:2022. In all instances, relevant tests will have undergone a period of internal validation/verification and have been deemed suitable for diagnostic use prior to being offered to users. Tests which are not accredited to ISO 15189:2022 will be clearly marked as such in the final report.
