All the tests available require DNA extracted from whole blood.  The minimum volume of blood (in EDTA tube– red topped) is 3mls.  There is no specific form for MPN or Genetic Thrombophilia testing.  Generic request forms can be used but please ensure the test requests are clearly written and clinical details are provided.

NOTE:  Thrombophilia testing will NOT be performed without clinical information.

Requests can also be made via TRAK.  Extended MPN tests (CALR/MPL/Exon12) are only available to Haematology patients and only once a JAK2 V617F test has been performed and reported as “NotDetected”.

Extended MPN Testing (CALR/MPL/Exon12) can always be added on after the JAK2 V617F analysis has been performed.  DNA samples are stored for up to a year.

Email any add-on requests to the MPN Mailbox: Molecular.MPN@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk

Mandatory Data Set

Referring clinicians are requested to comply with NHS Lothian policy on mandatory data set requirements for patient identification on laboratory requests.  The following information must be legible on the request form:

  • Patient identifier number (CHI or NHS number)
  • Surname
  • Forename
  • Date of Birth
  • Gender
  • Location/Requesting Clinician

If the CHI/NHS number is not available, the data set must include first line of the patient’s address and postcode.

Failure to comply with this policy will result in the sample being rejected. Samples without minimum data, or for which data on the sample and accompanying documents do not match, will not be accepted and will be returned to the sender.
