Changes to antimicrobial susceptibility reporting from NHS Lothian Microbiology Laboratory (from 16th Sept. 2024)

Reporting of some antimicrobial susceptibility testing results is changing in line with new European (EUCAST) recommendations.

Dear Colleagues,

Reporting of some antimicrobial susceptibility testing results is changing in line with new European (EUCAST) recommendations.

  • Higher dosing regimens are now required when using particular antibiotics for particular micro-organisms.
  • Antibiotic susceptibility will now be reported in some cases as “I” as well as the more familiar “S” and “R”.
  • The “I” category means “Susceptible, at Increased exposure/increased dose”.
  • Antibiotics reported as “I” are effective treatment options when given at higher dose and should not be avoided.
  • Please see the link below for further detail and guidance on antimicrobial dosing regimes in Adults if reported as “I”:
High dose antibiotic regimens | Right Decisions (scot.nhs.uk)
  • For paediatrics, increased dosing recommendations are being incorporated into updated paediatric guidance due to be released in the coming months. In this population, pharmacy/ infection specialist advice can be sought as required.

Further communications, to highlight colleagues of this change, such as a banner on the intranet home page (from September 23rd, 2024) are in place.
