Bacteriology
Bacteriology provides a full 24/7 service. There are BMS staff on site at all times but for rapid handling of emergency specimens the duty BMS must be contacted. For urgent / emergency specimens during normal day-time hours (0730 to 1800) please call X26021 to inform the lab before sending specimens. Outwith 0730 to 1800 the Duty Bacteriology BMS may be contacted through the RIE switchboard bleep #2900. (note: X26021 will not be answered between 1800 and 0730 – contact MUST be via bleep #2900)

Virology
Outwith hours below an emergency service is available at all times. The duty Biomedical Scientist (BMS) can be contacted to perform emergency tests. The Virology BMS on call may be contacted through the RIE switchboard (0131 536 1000)

CLINICAL ADVICE is available at any time, day or night, through the RIE switchboard: ask for the medical bacteriologist or clinical virologist on call. All consultant microbiologists are involved in infection control, both as on-call, and in the course of dealing with clinical teams in their patches.
