Transport arrangements
Suspected infection with the tick-borne Babesia microti/divergens. Very rare, clinical features similar to malaria. Severe infection more common in immunocompromised/asplenic patients.
First line test is microscopy/PCR of EDTA blood, with serology reserved as a second line test - as it requires discussion with the Hospital of Tropical Diseases (UCL) laboratory.
Sample storage arrangements
Store at room temperature.
Special instructions for collection
Microscopy/PCR: at least 2mL EDTA whole blood (red cap blood).
When sending to the laboratory please mark clearly on the request form: 'PLEASE DO NOT SPIN.'
Serology: 5-10ml (minimum 1ml) clotted blood/serum (brown cap blood).
Serological testing is only available upon discussion with the HTD laboratory - please contact on 020 7383 0041 (via switchboard) prior to sampling.
How to request
Microscopy: via paper request form. Please specify symptoms, travel history and organism to be tested in 'clinical details' field.
N.B. when sending to the laboratory please mark clearly on the request form: 'PLEASE DO NOT SPIN.'
Serology: Via trak - 'microbiology serology' - specify symptoms, travel history, and organism to be tested in 'clinical details' field

Availability
This is a referred test so should be sent Monday-Friday 9am-5pm.
Anticipated turnaround
Microscopy: 10 days from receipt of sample at SPDRL.
Serology: Up to 28 days.
