What happens if the result is positive or abnormal

A raised 3-methoxytyramine may occur with a dopamine-secreting tumour, however is more commonly caused by dopaminergic drugs or dietary catecholamines. Further action is not required if culprit medication can be identified and suspicion of phaeochromocytoma/paraganglioma is low. Consider repeating the collection, with reduced dietary catecholamines.
catecholamines.

General additional information

Total of free and conjugated fraction assayed.

Various drugs are known to increase metadrenaline and normetadrenaline levels, please contact the laboratory for more information (0131 537 1899). Note that sulphasalazine may interfere with normetadrenaline levels and confirmatory testing may be required from an external lab.
