Transport as soon as is practicable.
Special instructions for collection
Must be bronchiolar lavage (BAL) sample or serum clotted blood (brown tube). Note we cannot process EDTA blood or heparinised blood.
How to request
Via TRAK ('Aspergillus Antigen') - and specify whether BAL or serum collected.
Availability
This test is processed daily in the mycology laboratory at the RIE between Monday to Friday 9am-4pm.
Anticipated turnaround
Up to 24 hours once received in the lab.
What happens if the result is positive or abnormal
Will be reported on TRAK. For further information around result interpretation, please discuss with an infection specialist.
General additional information
There are significant limitations to this test as for any fungal diagnostic test for invasive aspergillosis. Clinical diagnosis should not be based on the result of Aspergillus antigen alone. The full clinical context of the patient should be included when making a diagnostic decision. If further discussion is required, please discuss with an infection specialist.
This test is currently unaccredited to ISO 15189.
