Haematology Malignancy Diagnostic Service (HMDS)

The HMDS provides an integrated diagnostic service covering all aspects of the diagnosis, monitoring of haematological malignancies and related conditions. The HMDS has facilitates for flow cytometry and a wide range of molecular investigation provided by the Immunophenotyping Laboratory and the Molecular Haemato-Oncology Laboratory respectively.

Metaphase cytogenetic studies for patients with leukaemia are carried out by South East Scotland Cytogenetics Service.

The HMDS is administered through NHS Lothian - University Hospitals Division and provides a comprehensive service to aid diagnosis, prognosis and treatment monitoring to the populations of Edinburgh, Borders, Fife and Inverness.

The HMDS is located at the Western General Hospital and is lead by consultant clinicians in Haematology and Haematopathology.

The laboratory is open between 09:00 and 17:00 hrs, Monday to Friday. There is no ‘out of hours’ service available and the laboratory is closed on public holidays, however investigations may be performed by special arrangement after discussion with a member of Immunophenotyping or Molecular diagnostics team.

Urgent Samples: Transport of urgent samples may require special transport arrangements to be made by the sender. The laboratory should be advised of the dispatch of an urgent sample.
